祖国を想う 'Thinking of Homeland'

Our first exhibition has opened.  Sasakawa Foundation is supporting us organise this event. The cafe 'bean' is now showing photos, artworks (above) and the letters written by the children in Nottingham and in Sendai, Japan.  The exhibition has been organised by two charities in Nottingham: 'Thinking of Homeland' and 'Ganbare Japan'.  The artworks (above) were made by 25 Japanese artists, who live away from home to raise money for affected areas by Tsunami.   This is our first exhibition and we are planning to open many more in different cities.  

He is Alex, the owner of the cafe, who has kindly agreed to let us use the space.  
It's the best cafe in Nottingham or perhaps in the UK!

クリスマスもそこまで来ています。イギリスは、１２月に入って急に寒くなりました。
スコットランドは、先週雪と風で学校が閉鎖になったぐらい。日本の東北地方も寒くなっているのでしょうね。

アメリカのAndy Anderson氏（故テイラーアンダーソンさんのお父様）から、ビデオクリップが届きました。

テイラー文庫 Taylor Bunko

１１月に、これまでのTaylor Anderson Memorial Fundの活動を通して、被災地への支援を続けているアンダーソン氏にアメリカの日本商工会議所からLuminous Individual Awardが贈られました。

以下は、JETAA USA のサイトより抜粋しました。

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of NYposthumously awarded Taylor Anderson, US JET who lost her life on 3.11, their Luminary Individual Award at their annual dinner last month (November 2011). The Luminous Individual Award was imparted to Taylor in recognition of furthering the relationship between Japan and the U.S. through her inspirational spirit and heroic sacrifice. A contribution of $50,000 was made to the Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund.

Japanese Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Karino, had a short film (embedded below) made for the event. The film features Taylor and her students’ reflections on her as a teacher as well as a message of thanks from the people of Tohoku in the Ishinomaki area. Taylor’s students are standing in front of a Taylor Anderson Reading Corner (Taylor Bunko) in the film.

All delegates (including JETAA USA CRs) who attended the JETAA International Conference this past October in Tokyo, brought one of their favorite children’s books to donate to the Taylor Anderson Reading Corners in the Ishinomaki schools. JETAA USA, in a show of solidarity for their fellow JET, also donated a small portion ($5000) of the JETAA USA Earthquake Fund to the Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund.

The NGHS Allstar Band

60 Nottingham girls (Y4-Y6) have recorded their Christmas songs and a CD will be released on 5th December!

Paul Stayner, who created our logo, has designed this cd cover.  It's very Christmas!  All the proceeds from the sale of the cd will go to Ganbare Japan to give direct support to the children in the area affected by 3.11 Tsunami. 

英国ノッティンガム・ガールズ・ハイスクールの６０人の生徒たちが、クリスマスの歌を録音しました。CDになって１２月５日に発売されます。この売り上げをすべてがんばれジャパンに寄付してくれることになりました。CDカバーは、がんばれジャパンのロゴを作ってくれたポール・ステイナー氏によるものです。音楽の教鞭をとっているマーク・ロルフ氏が作曲と作詞をしたとってもクリスマスチックな曲です。

Joint exhibition with Thinking of Homeland

「祖国を想う」 Thinking of Homelandとがんばれジャパンのジョイント展示会が１２月の初めからビーストンで催されます。ビーストンのセンスベリースーパーマーケットのすぐ近くにある’bean’というカフェのスペースを借りて行われます。オーナーのアレックスさんのご配慮で場所を提供していただけることになりました。

 写真にあるアートワークやイギリスと日本の子供たちの手紙やイギリス人のフォトジャーナリスト　ロバート・ギルフーリー氏の写真が展示されます。　アートワークは、イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、アメリカなど海外に住む日本人のアーティスト２０名による作品です。今その準備に大わらわです。

ここを皮切りに、イギリス全国を回る大きな計画を持っています。　現在、支援金を求めて奔走中です。このフレームのアートワークは、２５ポンドで販売中です。下のサイトから購入できます。　クリスマスのプレゼントにぜひ！

We are planning to have a small exhibition at cafe in Beeston called 'bean' near Sainsbury's supermarket, which, many people agree, offers the best coffee in Nottingham (or in UK!).  Alex, the owner, has kindly agreed to let us have the space.  The exhibition called 'Thinking of Homeland'.  Another local charity chaired by Kate Ferrucci and Ganbare Japan are jointly organising an event.

There will be the artwork created by 20 Japanese artists who live outside Japan, the letters written by the children in Nottingham and in Japan, and the photos by Robert Gilhooly, a British photojournalist, who lives in Japan and witnessed aftermath of the disaster on 11th March 2011.



We are currently looking for grants and donations for this.  We are hoping to run a roadshow of an exhibition in a larger scale in UK, starting from Nottingham.

Taylor Bunko テイラー文庫

万石浦小学校のテイラー文庫にお邪魔しました。　テイラー文庫は、ALTだったテイラー・アンダーソンの叶えきれなかった夢が託された図書館の中の図書館です。テイラーさんの通っていたアメリカの高校が津波の犠牲になったテイラーさんの意思を継ぐため、たくさんの募金を集め、テイラー文庫の形で石巻の複数の小学校を支援しています。　この日は、小学１年生の子供たちにテイラー文庫の一冊である「Blue berries and Salこけももとサル」という英語の絵本を読んであげることができました。

がんばれジャパンは、テイラー文庫がもっともっと活用してもらえるように、「絵本の読み聞かせ」プロジェクトを行う予定です。この日に行った様な、英語と日本語での読み聞かせをビデオにして、Youtubeビデオにのせて、子供たちがiPadを使ってリンクしてもらう、という計画。うまく起動にのれば、たくさんの子供たちが英語の絵本に気軽に体験できるようになるはず。

We visited the Taylor Bunko (library) at Mangoku-ura Elementary School.  The Taylor Bunko was created for the memory of Miss Taylor Anderson, who lost her life in the 3.11 Tsunami.  She was ALT and loved the children in Ishinomaki.  We had a chance to read one of her favourite books 'Blueberries and Sal' to Year 1 children.  The children were absorbed every single English word and the Japanese translation and slipped into the story.  It was amazing. 

Ganbare Japan is planning to run ' a reading corner' project to make a Youtube video to read the English books with Japanese translation.  The children can use a iPad to see the video clips to enjoy the books, anytime they want.  That will reinforce the usage of the Taylor Bunko and the iPad!

iPad が実践されてます！ iPad in use at classroom!

これが実践の場！　石巻私立貞山小学校の高橋先生は、iPadを限りなく活用しています。算数の授業に、またまた修学旅行の説明会に、運動会の準備にも。貞山小学校では、たくさんの先生がそれぞれの授業に使いたく、取り合いになっている話を聞き、2台目の寄贈をしました。小さなWifiルーターを駆使してのインターネットをうまく取り込んだ授業は、これからどんどん増えて欲しいインターアクティブな授業の方法です。　この写真にある大きなテレビは、教育委員会から石巻の小学校一校に一台づつ渡されています。これを大活用！

もっとたくさんの子供たちにこの経験をしてもらいたい！

アップルストア仙台一番町が、近い将来石巻の先生たちにiPadのトレーニングコースを開いてくれることになりました。iPadを使いこなす先生たちがもっともっと増えて欲しいですね。

Here is how the iPad is being used at classroom.  Suzuki-sensei (teacher) has become an expert in using an iPad for his class.  At this school Teizan Elementary School, the iPad given by Ganbare Japan has started playing an important role to make a classroom teaching more interactive.  The second iPad has been given to the school, as one was not enough!  The TV in the photo was a very common equipment at ES in Ishinomaki-city.  The city's education authority has given one big monitor TV per school.  This is a great example of what the TV can do and must do!

We are hoping that more children will see what an up-to-date and cutting edge technology can do and have an amazing experience with it.  Inspiration should become contagious!

Apple store Sendai Ichibancho has kindly agreed to provide the teachers in Ishinomaki a support by running a training course 'how to use iPad'.  How wonderful!

iPadの輪がまた広がった！Circle of iPds has extended!

９月おわりに石巻にある万石浦小学校の相澤校長先生にiPadを寄贈しました。ここでまたたくさんの子供たちが最新のテクノロジーを体験し、驚いたり、感心したり、楽しんだり、たくさんの未知の経験ができたら、それで良しです。子供たちだけでなく、先生たちにいろいろな刺激をあたえることができたら、もっといい！　まだがんばるぞ。

We visited Ishinomaki-city at the end of September. This is one of the schools of our visits.  We donated a iPad to Mangoku-ura Elementary School.  This is Aizawa Principal.  He has been very busy linking with many parts of the world: USA, France and UK.  He and his staff at the school make the best of all the supports given from all over the world.

It is 6 months to the day since the earthquake and tsunami of 11 March. Come and join lantern-making workshops, badge-making workshops, origami crane sessions and other Japanese craft activities to raise awareness of local communities affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Lantern-makers are encouraged to take part in the Thames Festival Night Carnival on the Sunday evening, with members of the Japanese community and friends, accompanied by Japanese drumming by the Joji Hirota Taiko drummers.

Thank you very much for the letters.  We had a very big earthquake on 11th March.  Since then, earthquakes have never stopped.  Are you all ok in England?  We are better now.  We do our best!  Hope you will do the same.  Gook luck!

iPadが石巻小学校に到着。

を届けに行きました。　今年は、例年より早く8月22日に2学期が始まります。　子供たちの総合教育にiPadを大いに活用してもらいたいです。

iPad has arrived at Ishinomaki Elementary School.  Jane Sensei (=teacher), 2nd from the left, and Nishimaki Sensei (3rd), Vice Principal from Teizan Elementary School handed it to Suzuki Kocho-sensei, Principal and Kondo Kyoto-sensei, Vice Principal.   Back to school on 22nd August, earlier than usual.  The children will enjoy reading the letters from the children in England and viewing beautiful photos of England.

Richard and Kiyoko,

I picked them up today!  I've looked at the DVD's that you included and they are AWESOME.  The England presentation has such gorgeous photos.  The letters are very sweet, the Japanese translations are great!  I am passing some to my fellow ALT's in Ishi as well as the JETs in Tome-shi as well.  They didn't have tsunami damage but some of their schools were damaged pretty badly from the earthquake.  Is this ok?

I am looking at the iPads right now.  These apps are great!  I am watching the Toy Story app right now.  It's amazing, my teacher's are going to love this!  I noticed that one of the boxes has a UK plug and the other one a Japanese plug.  Is there a way for us to get another Japanese plug, should I mail the UK plug back.  We have an apple store in Sendai, do you think they would do an exchange?    

I am going to a music assembly and my farewell ceremony at Teizan on Tuesday morning.  I will see if I can take some photos/video with the iPad to send to you.  I will look through the apps today and tomorrow and sit down with the teacher's on Tuesday (they are busy since it's the last day before school ends) or Thursday to show them the capabilities.  VERY EXCITING! 

Kiyoko - I am going to see Lori Henderson tomorrow along with the ambassador and his wife in Ishinomaki.  I think I will have to bring the iPad to show Lori what you've sent us!

Welcome! This iPad was donated by the Ganbare Japan, UK-Japan Tsunami School Fund, which is a charity based in Nottingham, UK.

ようこそ。このiPadは英国のチャリティー「がんばれジャパン」から寄付されております。

Our aim is to help schoolchildren in the tsunami-affected area in Japan. So we have raised money by running Japanese cultural events in Nottingham and the East Midlands in UK, and have used it to buy iPads for donation to schools. We want to help the schoolchildren in 2 ways:

チャリティの目的は、2011年3月11日の津波で被害にあった学校の子供たちに勇気と希望を与えることです。イギリス東中部地方にあるノッティンガムを中心に、日本の文化を伝えるイベントを通してお金を集め、iPadを購入し学校に寄付するプロジェクトを始めました。

iPadを通して、2通りの方法で学校の子供たちをサポートしていきます。

Firstly we want to give an iPad to their teacher, who can then use some English-Learning apps to make English lessons even more stimulating and effective. So we have pre-loaded this iPad with the best free English learning apps currently in the world market for you to use in English Language classes.

1番目に、学校の英語学習をより楽しくするために、先生にiPad をお届けします。世界中の英語学習に使われている無料アプリケーションの中から、一番人気が高く、日本人に最適なものを選びiPadにダウンロードしました。　

And secondly, we want to inspire children by the direct connection between the UK and Japan. So we have included illustrated heart-felt letters written in English by British schoolchildren and then translated into Japanese by the Nottingham Japanese community. To give another sense of our British culture, we have also included photos of the Nottingham area, taken by Michael Parker, a talented local photographer. We hope you will show these to your classes. The iPad is also an easy way for schools in Japan and UK to communicate with each other. You can record video messages with the camera and email them directly from the iPad to us at Ganbare Japan and we will pass onto a suitable school in Nottingham.

6000 マイル彼方から シルヴィ ギエム 6000 miles away - Sylvie Guillem

フランスパリ生まれのバレーダンサー、 100年に1人の逸材とまで称される現代バレエの女王、ヴィギエムがロンドンのSadler's Wellにて出演する『6000マイル彼方』という3部作を見てきました。

6000miles awayの題目は、’日本’のことを指しています。　今週木曜日7月7日のショーのチケット代がすべてイギリスの赤十字に寄付され、日本の津波の被災地に送られます。　シルヴィーの30年のバレー歴の間に日本に訪れたことも多く、今回の寄付からも彼女の日本への情熱が読み取れます。　　

驚くほどの柔軟な体をもち、開脚で空中にジャンプする超天才バレーダンサーは、46歳を向かえてもいまだに、世界のバレーダンサーの頂点にいます。

iPad being ready!

iPads are standing by to be fully charged.  We are now uploading the letters and the photo slide.  We are also planning to install  e-books, which Japanese children can learn English.

We spoke to a ELT teacher in Ishinomaki city, where we send one of those to.  Jane, an English teacher is going to train Japanese teachers at her school, so that they can use iPad for their lessons.

 This is a NPO in Japan.  They have been helping orphanages in Japan.  The NPO was established before the tsunami but they have been giving great support to the orphans in Tohoku.

After Japan’s horrific 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami, through tremendous heartbreak and hardship, the question we have all repeatedly heard — “what can we do to help?” — is being asked by friends, neighbors, and communities around the world.
Countless local and international agencies are on the ground doing extraordinary work for victims in the affected regions, but the road ahead for Japan will be an arduous one that will require endurance, fortitude and resolve. After the initial phase of emergency relief work has been completed, the question will remain, for a long time to come,

“What can we do to help?”

Smile Kids Japan and Living Dreams have joined forces to tackle that question and provide specific, effective solutions. Our joint venture, Smiles & Dreams: Tohoku Kids’ Project, will work to support children’s homes (orphanages) affected by the disaster. We will immediately address their needs, the needs of the children who rely on them and will continue to support those children in the long-term.
Our first act will be to restore basic necessities, including both personal and shared items. We will replenish basic needs such as clothing, baby supplies and basic medicines. We will also provide homes with items that will help them rebuild a nurturing environment for the children that rely on them for care and support; items such as toys, computers, books and supplies for a variety of hobbies. We will work directly with children’s homes and the government agencies responsible for them to best assess the needs of each and every home affected by the disaster. Through our combined networks, our organisations will directly purchase and distribute necessary items quickly and efficiently.
Our second act will be to connect children’s homes directly to professional child counselling services and also to provide them with a wide range of activities to help their children emotionally move on after the tragedy they’ve endured. Proper counselling along with activities such as trips to theme parks, camping, going to concerts and various others will improve children’s outlook on their lives and future. Counselling services and activities will be funded and arranged directly through our organisations’ networks.

Support Child Survivors of the Tohoku Disaster Now

Your monetary donations will help rebuild lives that were shattered within minutes. You will be replacing necessities, including both personal and shared items that took years for children and homes to collect. You will be providing children with professional counselling and a wide range of therapeutic activities to help them move on past the tragedy they’ve endured. Through your donations, you will allow us to provide children’s homes with the goods and services they need to create safe and nurturing environments once again for the children who rely on them. You will personally be turning these institutions back into supportive homes.

マグニチュード９．０の凄まじい地震、その直後に襲ってきた津波、この言葉にならないショックと困難を目撃して以来、私達の周り ―友達、近隣の人達、地域、そして世界中で― 同じ「質問」が繰り返し聞かれます。　「私達にできる支援は？」

現在、国内外の数え切れないほどの機関団体が、被災者への力強い支援サポートを展開していま す。しかし、日本を待ち受けている未来は容易なものではありません。沢山の資金予算、人々の忍耐、そして難しい決断が強いられる事でしょう。支援第１段階 と言える「緊急支援」がひと段落した後も、この「質問」は続きます。

「私達にできる支援は？」

スマイルキッズジャパンとリビング・ドリームスは、 この「質問」に対して、協同で、明確かつ効果的な解決法、対応方を提供できるよう、働きかけます。　私達の共同事業は、この災害により一層の困難を抱えて いる児童養護施設への支援です。早急に施設の抱えるニーズ、及びそこで生活し、施設スタッフに依存して暮らす各子ども達の個別ニーズを確認し、長期ビジョ ンでサポートを展開します。

サポート第１弾は、不足している基本的生活必需品の供給です。衣類、乳幼児グッズ、基本的な医薬品といった生活必需品を補充します。また、各施設の 養育環境の再配備に必要な物品（おもちゃ、コンピューター、本、各種趣味の道具など）の寄付も併せて行います。各児童養護施設、関係行政機関と直接連携す る事により、被災施設の抱える個別ニーズに対して細やかな対応を実現します。　スマイルキッズジャパンとリビング・ドリームスの持つそれぞれのネットワー クを駆使し、必要物品を直接購入し、それらを早急かつ効果的に配達します。
サポート第２弾は被災し、心に大きなショックを受けた子ども達の内面をサポートすべく、各施設に児童心理ケアの専門家を紹介し、カウンセリング機会 を提供する事、また子ども達の心理的ダメージが少しでも癒えるような様々なアクティビティを提供します。　適切なカウンセリングや各種アクティビティ（遊 園地遠足、キャンプ、音楽鑑賞など）は、子ども達自身の生活、将来への展望に前向きな姿勢をもたらします。　カウンセリングサービスとアクティビティの必 要資金は、スマイルキッズジャパンとリビング・ドリームスのネットワークを通して、調達活動を行います。

　平成23年6月14日、青木紀男教育長と学校栄養士の鈴木美智子さんから話を聞く機
会があり、以下の内容であった。

　なお、南相馬市の小中学校の授業は原発から30ｋｍ圏外の南相馬市鹿島区で行われ
ており、生徒数の多い原町区（緊急時避難準備区域）、および相馬市に避難している
小中学校生はスクールバス20台で鹿島区の学校に通っている。

●小中学校の給食について　＜6月11日より学校給食が開始＞
1. これまでは、生徒が弁当箱を持参し、おにぎりと海苔、ウインナーなどの出来合
いのおかずをもらい、これに牛乳という内容だった。

　食中毒を予防するため、5月いっぱいでおにぎりを中止し、6月から主食はパンかご
飯になった。

　6月11日より給食室を使った震災前の給食が開始された。

2. 昼食の基準カロリー数は小学校 660kcal、中学校 850kcalである。

　南相馬市の小中学校生では 4月の時点で、小学校 530kcal、中学校 600kcalとカロ
リーは少なく、 6月は小学校 750kcal、中学校 860kcalで基準を越えるようになった。

3. 昼食にかける費用は200円から280円となった。

4. 内部被曝を避けるため食品の生産地を一つ一つチェックし、記録している。

5. 夏休み明けに原町第一小学校、原町第二中学校(いずれも原町区で放射線量は少な
い区域)の給食室の使用許可が県からおり、8月末からは、十分な食事を鹿島区内に搬
送できるようになる。給食搬送に向けて、保健所と相談しながら、冷蔵庫の確保や、
保冷の方法を検討している。

●福島県は、環境放射線モニタリング調査を6月1日から6月10日まで行った。
　平均１μsv/hを越えた校庭については、表土交換を国の補助で行う予定である。

●学校生活について
1. 南相馬市の小中学生は約6,000人であるが避難先から少しずつ戻ってきており、そ
の37%が南相馬市で暮らしている。

2. 南相馬市を離れて生活する小中学生本人と父母兄弟(約1800人)に心のケアチーム
が関わっている。

　南相馬市内に生活する小中学校生とその保護者に対して国、県の援助を得て通常の
約２倍の臨床心理士が心のケアを行っている。市内、外の小中学生には、ともに学校
開始時は分からなかったPTSDが、現在見られるようになってきた。

3. 南相馬市原町区、相馬市と鹿島区の登下校にスクールバスが使用されているが乗
り降りには、行き帰りとも必ず教師が見守りを行っている。

相馬市から鹿島区に通学している生徒を乗せるスクールバス2台は当初、相馬駅前か
ら出ていたが、相馬駅に停車するバスが増えてきたため、相馬駅裏の土地を確保し、
そこから出発するようになった。

　鹿島区へのスクールバスでの小中学生の搬送は、緊急時避難区域が解除されるまで
行う予定。

4. 体育館の照明は勉強するのには暗かったので、蛍光灯を新たに設置した。

5. 教室にはエアコンを設置することが決まったが、体育館のエアコン設置に関して
はこれからの課題となっている。

6. 南相馬市では小学校16校、中学校6校ある。現在、鹿島区の中で合同学級として授
業を行っているが、今後学校ごと完全分離して独立した授業を行うようにしたいとの
ことであった。

7. 夏休みは7月23日から8月24日とした。

●今後の課題
1. 学校内で原子力発電と事故、放射線の勉強を進めていきたい。
2. 医療従事者から放射線と健康被害について医学的見地に基づいた広報を行って欲
しい。

一人の運転手からのメッセージ：

今日、私は被災地のある学校の330人の子供に野菜を提供頂けないかというメールをもらいました。この子達は地震発生以来3ヶ月も野菜を食べてい ないとの事でした。自分達の子供たちがこのような状況であったのならと思うと心が痛みます。私たちは東北が甚大な災害のに直面した子供たちに新鮮な野菜な 果物を可能な限り送り続けたいと私は思っております。もしもご協力頂けるのではあればぜひ是非ご連絡頂けますでしょうか？私達は決して利益のためにやって いるわけではありません。すべてのお金は被災行かなければならない場所、被災地の子供達へ、提供します。是非ご協力頂ければと存じます。

１４日(火）に，６月のお話朝会があり，校長先生から二つのお話がありました。
一つ目は「イギリスの子供たちから，メッセージが届いた」というお話でした。はじめに地図を使って，イギリスの位置を確認しました。 　その後，イギリスの１０歳前後の子供たちが書いた，約４０通ものメッセージが紹介されました。

A letter from Fukushima

This is a letter from Robert Gilhooly after his visit to Fukushim.  This is something you don't read or hear from the media in the UK or Japan. 

Since the earthquake and tsunamis struck Japan's northeast on March 11, I have spent some time in the affected region. It goes without saying that it has been a distressing few months, meeting people who have suffered terrible tragedy. 

In recent visits there have been more positive signs of mental and physical recovery – children returning to school, fish markets recommencing operations, people who lost their homes being transferred from evacuation shelters to temporary housing.Yet, there are some communities outside of the tsunami-hit areas that may never recover, and may, indeed, simply continue to be ghost towns. 

On my most recent visit I visited a school in Otama town about 60 km from the damaged Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant. The school had recently removed the top soil from the playground for fear of the long-term impact of elevated radiation levels on the pupils. Play time outdoors had been reduced to 1 hour per day, and some parents were not letting their children out of their homes at all, other than to attend classes.

The people in the village had barely been affected by the magnitude 9 earthquake and certainly not by the tsunami – at least not directly. Yet, parents had pressed the local education authorities to take precautions for the sake of their children, despite the fact that radiation levels in the town were still below those considered permissable.

Among the children at the school were a handful who had been evacuated from a town about 4 miles from the nuclear power plant. Several weeks before I had visited that town and found it desserted. In the gardens of houses some of there were toys that some of these children had played with and stray or dead dogs that they had once petted.

Meanwhile, the residents of pretty Tomioka town were being transported to a temporary shelter up in the hills above Otama's primary school. When I arrived the 100 people who have made the  shelter their home for the past 10 weeks or so were awaiting the arrival of three popular comedians who were visiting to try to lift their spirits. One of the celebrities – himself a Fukushima native – sang a traditional local song. The residents clapped along, many moved to tears by the gesture.

After the entertainers left, each wiping away tears as they climbed into their chauffeur-driven limos, I talked with some of the residents, many of whom had rushed from their homes in Tomioka so hastily they had not even had time to switch off the lights.

One lady in her 60s was looking after her two small grandchildren, one aged 4, the other 18 months. The childrens' mother and father had moved to a town in another part of the prefecture in order to secure jobs and were only able to visit the children on weekends.

“This is how it is – little by little our community is falling apart,” she said. “It's not bad enough that we have lost our homes. We also are being separated from our loved ones and friends.”

Another resident said that he had been sickened by the images of devastation caused by the tsunamis, but that the situation of Tomioka residents was in some ways even more dire: “At some stage the people on the coasts will rebuild. We, however, may never be allowed to go back home.”

In a more serious moment during the earlier entertainment, one of the three comedians had urged the Tomioka residents to fight on and get the compensation they deserved out of Tokyo Electric Power Company, the company running the leaking power plant.

I asked some of the residents if they intended to follow his suggestion, but they were unsure exactly how they could. One man said that he and his wife would be moved to accommodation about 700 km away, though there teenage children would remain in Fukushima to continue their education. Another woman said her family, who had all previously lived in Tomioka, were already “disbanded” -- some were with relatives in Tokyo, others working for a company in around 300 km north of Otama. She herself would be staying with other relatives about 50 km away.

“We want to keep in touch with family and friends, but there are no computers here, no way of sending mails or using Skype, and so on.” This meant, she said, that there was also limited access to outside news and information that might help them in their coming fight for compensation.

I have since been trying to find someone who could perhaps help these people by supplying them with computers. If there is any way that you can help, I be happy to assist in any way I can.
