Lace Market Gallery 写真展

We had a very successful evening at Lace Market Gallery (LMG) on 23rd May.  We set up the exhibition a day before and were very pleased with the space and the light coming through.  Many thanks to Annette at LMG to help us make this happen.

The exhibition displays the artworks by Japanese artists, photos by Robert Gilhooly, letters by children in England and Japan. Some visitor said 'It's very moving.  It brings the reality of the children's experience in Japan to children in the UK.'　

It is very beautiful to see all the twenty prints.  The frame will come with twenty different prints, which you can change as you like.  They are for sale at the gallery or  'Thinking of Homeland'.  Lots of visitors bought them at reception!


The exhibition will be open till Friday 8th June. Hope you can visit.

Message from Mayor Toba in Rikuzentakata

At 2:46pm on March 11, 2011, a M 9.0 earthquake struck the Sanriku Coast. At 2:49pm on that day, a Giant Tsunami Warning was issued. Shortly after, the City of Rikuzentakata was hit by a tsunami. Our town is essentially gone. On this day and in the days following, of the 24,246 people living in our city, we lost almost 1,700. There are still many who are missing. Over 3,300 buildings were either completely or partially destroyed. Included in the buildings washed away or ruined are our city hall, library, museum, gymnasium, civic center, hospital, pre-schools, day care centers, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, parks, fire department, etc. Our city has changed forever. We created over 80 evacuation shelters, and at its peak housed over 10,000 people. Our lives have changed forever. It does not end here. We are committed and dedicated to recovery. We will rebuild our city. Your generous donations of time, goods, money, and personnel, along with your letters, cards, prayers, and support have kept us going. For this and more, we are truly grateful. We do not want to be forgotten. We want people to know who we are, and how our city will change. For that, we still need your help. I am Futoshi Toba, Mayor of Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture. The situation in the disaster area is still very critical. We are often asked whether, “Is it really okay for us to visit the disaster area?” “Do we need to be volunteers in order to visit the disaster area?” We are working hard towards recovery, one step at a time. There are now several stores in town. We would love for you to visit us. If you have time during Golden Week or summer vacation, please come for a visit. Being here, seeing with your own eyes, identifying how you feel about our situation here?if you could go home and share these thoughts with your family and friends, we believe people will continue to keep us in their thoughts. Please, everyone, please do come to this disaster area. We welcome you. Public facilities such as city hall destroyed by the tsunami, will be torn down beginning in June. We would like for you to see our city. We do not want to be forgotten. This is our hope.

Thank you for coming to our exhibition 'Thinking of Homeland'  at Oban House on 10th March. 

Many visitors came and enjoyed the talks by Mayumi and Paul& Stu. 

We made delicious sushi, takoyaki and pancake!

Our next event will take place at Lace Market Gallery in Nottingham.  

It will be open from Wed 23rd May with a reception at 5 pm.

去年の東北での震災・津波から一年が過ぎようとしています。　一年を振り返りながら、被災地で今何が起こっているのかをお伝えします。

Thinking of Homelandの海外在住の日本人アーティストのアートワークと東京在住のイギリス人写真ジャーナリスト、ロバート・ギルフーリー氏の写真を展示します。

被災地支援に参加した赤木まゆみさんのトーク、ポール・ステイナー氏による日本の漫画文化に関するトークと漫画ワークショップなど、お寿司やケーキを食べながら、日本を楽しみましょう！

“Thinking of Homeland Japan” and “Ganbare Japan” are having a joint exhibition on Saturday 10th March from 11 am to 6 pm to show the progress of the recovery of the North East Japan from the Tsunami. The exhibition include prints by Japanese artists on the theme “Thinking of Homeland”, and a letter exchange project between British and Japanese schoolchildren. Photographs of the current state of the affected area of Japan by award-winning photojournalist Robert Gilhooly are also on display.

Mayumi Akagi will give a short talk about her experience in Japan as part of All Hands Volunteers when she went there in October to help with the clean-up effort. There will be also a talk about one of the important Japanese culture 'Manga' by Paul Stayner, a manga artist, and a manga workshop too. 

There will be sushi, cakes, coffee and other drinks available, and a raffle.

イギリス新聞

石巻私立貞山小学校から、イギリス新聞が届きました。

もうすぐ卒業を迎える６年生が、イギリスに関するプロジェクトを行って、その結果を新聞にして、送ってくれました。

来週の月曜日に、iPadを使って、子供たちとスカイプをします。イギリスに関するいろいろな質問がとびだしそうです。イギリスの給食のこと、子供たちが遊ぶゲームのこと、イギリス人の食事など、まだまだありそう。

遠いイギリスの国をどんな風に見ているのか、とっても楽しみです。

Reception Thinking of Homeland at Bean

The reception at the Cafe Bean in Beeston, Nottingham was very successful.  We had 74 people. Mayumi's talk was very inspirational for all of us. The sushi and all other Japanese food were gone very quickly.  Thanks to Akiko and Miwako for delicious sushi.

You can see our guests were very engaged with the talk and the photos that Mayumi showed us.

We were given some ideas about next events; an amateur wrestler, Stu (who did NGHS Allsters CD cover anime), suggested we come to one of his wrestling championship!
